The Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman Model For Stress. Developed in 1984, Lazarus stress is defined as an “imbalance between demands and resources.” What the two researchers meant by this was that every person has resources and skills available to them. When talking about stress, these skills are known as coping mechanisms. Lazarus and Folkman coined the concept of cognitive appraisal and reappraisal. According to their theory, stress coping implies an intricate process of thinking and assigning meaning to it. They explained the coping mechanism by the stress cycle where an individual’s perception of the stressful situation decides how he would cope with it Lazarus and Folkman (1984) suggested there are two types of coping responses emotion focused and problem focused: Emotion-focused Coping .

Problem-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to alter a stressful situation, and emotional-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to reduce the distress produced by a stressful situation.
